Kenya: Maasai Women Turn to Fish Farming as Drought Claims Millions of Cattle | Firstpost Africa
The Maasai tribe of the east African country of Kenya has turned to fish farming after a deadly drought claimed the lives of millions of cattle. The drought that lasted four years from 2020 to 2023 witnessed horrifying scenes of decomposing carcasses of livestock. The Maasai community is now recovering from the disaster and with the help of the government, is farming fish that can be sold in the market for up to 300 Kenyan shillings or over $2. The project is aimed at diversifying the income source of the remote community, providing a buffer against the climate crisis, as well as encouraging fish consumption to help them escape malnutrition and hunger in the future.
